The Circutor CVM-A1500A Power Quality Analyzer monitors electrical networks and logs power quality problems in your facility. It helps maintenance teams find out why machines stop and what to do about it.

Overview

Production stoppages cause financial losses. Most come down to a lack of planning, such as logistics issues or missed preventive maintenance. Some causes are obvious, but others are much harder to spot. Poor power supply quality is one of them. You cannot see it, yet its impact can be as serious as running out of raw material.

Modern machinery is increasingly sophisticated and delicate. However, most designs take the quality of the voltage waveform for granted. When a machine stops for no clear reason, the maintenance team often restarts it without further incidents. The real problem then stays unknown and may return at any time.

Swells, dips and interruptions in the supply are common. Protective circuit breakers may then halt machinery to prevent very expensive damage. Full protection against these problems can call for significant investment. The right level depends on how often they happen and how they affect your operations. A much more affordable first step is a device that detects and logs them. With that information, you can address the problem with a far better chance of success.

Why Use a Network Analyser

Real information about the state of the electricity network is crucial. It shows whether a production stoppage comes from poor power supply quality. Network analysers help maintenance managers understand what is happening at any moment. As a result, they can make the best decision, either to avoid stoppages or to reduce their impact.

Circutor developed the CVM-A1500A to make this task as easy as possible. It quickly reports any network quality incidents in a facility, so you can act straight away.

Key Features of the Circutor CVM-A1500A Power Quality Analyzer

  • Certification under the IEC 61000-4-30 standard.
  • Detection of supply quality faults in the waveform from the half cycle.
  • Half-cycle timing of 10 ms in 50 Hz networks and 8.3 ms in 60 Hz networks.
  • Complete information for maintenance managers about each problem.
  • Multi-point monitoring, because several units at key points show when, where and how a problem struck.
  • An intuitive user interface and an integrated web server for easy access to power quality data.

No Expert Needed to Read the Data

Interpreting network quality data has always needed a specialist engineer. Some sites even have quality equipment that nobody uses, because staff struggle to read its data. Most quality analysers are “black boxes” that give no information unless you connect them to interpretation software. You then need computer skills to download the data and knowledge of the software to read it. If you combine equipment from several manufacturers, the task gets even harder. That is why Circutor gave this model colour screens that show the key information for decision making.

ITIC Curve on Screen

The CVM-A1500A shows the ITIC curve (also CBEMA and SEMIF 47) on its screen. Any maintenance manager can display it with just three clicks. The curve shows a red triangle each time an event occurs. So you can quickly see how many quality events there have been and how much harm they caused.

  • Green zone: events such as power surges or voltage drops that did not harm your electronic equipment.
  • Red zone: a swell that has most likely damaged your electronic equipment.
  • Triangles near the top left are the most damaging, due to their high value and duration.
  • Yellow zone: voltage drops that may make electronic systems reboot or stop because of low voltage.

One glance at this screen tells a maintenance manager why a malfunction may have happened. If the event repeats regularly, they also have the information to install a system that reduces its impact. As a result, they avoid production stoppages and the financial losses that follow.

Installation Events

An event counter shows how many events occurred in each phase. So you can tell whether the problem always comes from the same phase or repeats regularly. For a closer look, you can review each event in detail on the analyser’s screen. A few clicks show you:

  • The phase where the event took place.
  • Its voltage percentage.
  • Voltage before the event, which shows whether it was a fast switching event or a slow one due to overloading.
  • How long it lasted, from the half cycle.
  • Date and time of the event.
  • Associated waveform, showing the voltage sinusoid at the exact moment it happened.

Harmonics and Unbalance

Voltage events are not the only risk. Power quality analysers also help you avoid future problems by monitoring other key parameters. For example, the device shows harmonic decomposition up to 63, so you can see the harmonic load in your installation. Harmonics can reduce performance, trip a circuit breaker or cause overheating and faults in electronic loads.

Installations often have uneven currents in their phases, due to poor load distribution or a later line extension. This can make current flow through the neutral wire. In these cases, you need to measure the neutral current to avoid insulation failures. Such failures can cause breakages that lead to swells and damage components. Furthermore, a site with its own distribution transformer may see it overheat, with premature ageing that shortens its useful life.

To prevent these hazards, the CVM-A1500 measures neutral current as well as any unbalance in voltages and currents. It reports any risky situation both on screen and by email.

Data Display on a PC

The CVM-A1500A has a web server with built-in memory. Any user can open the logged data in a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome. From there, you can monitor all parameters in real time and produce graphs and tables. You can also view quality events and waveforms and easily export data to Excel. None of this needs expert power quality software. In addition, the analyser works with Circutor’s PowerStudio Energy Management Software (EMS). You can add it to a complete network of usage management equipment for an overview of the whole installation.

Network Quality at a Glance

With the Circutor CVM-A1500A power quality analyser, any user gets full control of the parameters that can cause a malfunction. It also shows whether an electrical fault comes from inside or outside the installation. With exported data, maintenance managers can negotiate with the electric utility after a stoppage caused by poor supply quality. They can even demand guarantees for machines that behave abnormally. The data shows whether the failure had an external cause or came from the machine itself.
